Uganda Primates & Lion Safari
The four iconic species that we will be photographing on this trip to the country often referred to as the Pearl of Africa, are the Mountain Gorilla (classified as critically endangered by IUCN), Chimpanzee (endangered), Golden Monkey (endangered), and the unique tree-climbing Lion (vulnerable) in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
While the aforementioned are the key subjects, in Uganda, we are never short of wild subjects to photograph, especially during the safaris, both on land and while on the river cruise. And having our own private vehicle and boat mean that we have the necessary space and to some extent, time, to get the best shots possible during our visit.
As always, the group is very small with a maximum of 5 participants only. Our experienced guide was an ex-ranger that has worked and trained in numerous national parks in Africa. His intimate knowledge of the locations and close connections to the parks and staff, is the secret ingredient to the success of our time in this beautiful country.
We will visit a mix of prominent nature reserves, from savannah to cloud forests, in search of our target subjects as well as the many varied and interesting species that inhabit all these different environments.
To further increase the number of species for you to record, we have also arranged for a boat cruise, to see some of the waterbirds and mammals that occupy the river.
A few key features of our tour:
* Truly small group size – a maximum of 5 participants only, plus me as your tour leader.
* Covering a variety of habitats so that you will have the opportunity to record a greater number of animals and plants.
* The trekking skills of trained rangers and personal guide will enable you to have the best possible chances of seeing and learning about your photographic subjects.
* A private river cruise so that we can position ourselves at the right place for the shots.
* Two Mountain Gorilla treks, two Chimpanzee treks, a Golden Monkey trek, two safari drives, a boat cruise, and a marshland walk. All this in ten days!
Please do note that for primates, specifically the Mountain Gorillas and the Golden Monkeys, we could be climbing/trekking anything from five minutes to several miles on hilly terrain before we locate them. Most people with reasonable fitness can do this without problem as we will go at a steady pace. A porter is available to help you carry your camera bag as well as hoist or pull you up a small slope (should you need it), for a nominal fee.
The close proximity of seeing these magnificent animals in their natural habitats is very memorable and incredibly rewarding. It is also a crucial component to ensure their continued conservation.
