Indonesia Endangered Wildlife Tour
This is a unique tour that focuses on photographing some of the many endemic and endangered wildlife found on four Indonesian islands: Kalimantan (south Borneo), Sulawesi, Komodo and Rinca Island. They include species such as the Orangutan, Black Crested Macaque, Komodo Dragon, Spectral Tarsier, Proboscis Monkey and many more.
In these unique habitats, we will encounter a very diverse range of fauna and flora. With experienced, private guides, we can spend as long as we wish to photograph these fascinating subjects. I will be on hand to give as much or as little guidance as you prefer.
We will be using different modes of transport on our trip. In Kalimantan for example, we will be travelling and living on a traditional, double-decked, private boat with a dedicated crew consisting of a cook, boatman and guide. While the accommodation onboard this native boat is modest, it will enable us to penetrate areas of the rainforest that are inaccessible by road. In the evening, we will be surrounded by the wonderful sounds of the rainforest whilst we anchor by the side of the river. It is typical to see fireflies lighting up the Nipa Palm like a glittering Christmas tree!
We will also be working from a sea boat during our visits to the Jurassic looking Komodo and Rinca Islands. Visitors are not permitted to remain on these National Parks overnight, so we will be mooring at designated piers, with the opportunity to watch the Flying Foxes (large fruit bats) at sunset as they leave their roosting site.
Between flights, the accommodation will be in hotels, with stopovers in Bali and Jakarta. In Sulawesi, we will also be stationed at a comfortable homestay close to the nature reserve. From here, we will make daily visits to track and photograph the charismatic Black Crested Macaques. Our private guide is part of the research team and he will be able to share his extensive knowledge of this species while we photograph them.
Aside from the outlined species, there will be many more animals that we will work on, invariably a good number will be unidentifiable! The rainforest is full of secrets and I promise you that it will be a photographic trip like no other.
