White-tailed Sea Eagle Extravaganza
This 5-day photographic spectacular focuses on arguably one of the most magnificent raptors: the White Tailed Eagle, sometimes also known as the Sea Eagle. We will be based in the world’s most densely populated area of this species, in Norway.
Uniquely, we will work both out at sea as well as in a hide. I will help you attain a variety of images of this eagle in the ever changing winter light and beautiful landscape, and we will also have a local expert on hand providing additional knowledge and support.
Over the years, I have photographed the White-tailed Sea Eagles in two other countries and this location surpassed both of them, in terms of population density, working distance, quality of hide, and chances of seeing/photographing them. This is because our local experts were born and raised here, and in addition one of them has spent several years studying these birds for his doctorate degree/PhD. We cannot be in a better place and in safer hands to see and photograph the Sea Eagles.
This trip will have a maximum of 5 participants, split into two small groups. I will take turns to spend time with you, and you will be fully briefed so that you can maximise the photographic opportunities presented to you. Apart from being great naturalists, the local experts that we’ll be working with are also experienced photographers, so you will have enhanced support for both experiences.
This trip involves very little walking – a couple of hundred yards to the hide for example. But you will be spending an extended period – up to 12 hours in the hide. So some stamina is necessary to stay focused, whilst waiting for the perfect shot.
When we are out at sea, it can get very cold. We will be provided with special insulated and waterproof overalls to give added protection from the elements.
Most of the pictures you see here, were made with focal lengths between 200-400mm using a full-frame sensor camera body. So you will be very, very, close to the action!
We will be picked up from the airport and transported to our accommodation by the sea, for the next few days.
Day 2 & 3
One of these days will involve a full day photographing the eagles on a dedicated boat out at sea. The other will be spent in a very comfortable hide with underfloor heating, electricity and a toilet!
We may choose to either go out to sea again, stay in the luxury hide for a second day, or try for waterbirds, such as Eiders and Long-tailed Ducks etc.
After breakfast we will be driven to the airport for our homebound flight.
